Call for applications:  

GLOW Creative Connections Artists’ Residencies 

March – July 2025  

Deadline: Wednesday 5th February 2025 

Fee: £3000 (20 half day sessions or 12 full days)  

GLOW Newcastle are seeking applications from artist-practitioners with experience of working with children and young people whose social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges impact on their learning and quality of life.  

 

We are looking for: 

  • Drama / Theatre practitioners 
  • Crafter-maker artists 
  • Rap artists and recording artists

 

About the Project

GLOW Creative Connections is an action research project focused on improving understanding and practice between creative and cultural sector practitioners and teachers who co-create artistic experiences with and for young people with SEMH challenges.   

We are very pleased to be working in partnership on this project with Mary Astell Academy, Walker Riverside Academy and Newcastle College Childcare Department. 

We are seeking artists who will co-facilitate a Co-creative Residency with young people and their teaching teams in one of these three settings.  

The Artist-practitioners will also be part of an Action Learning Group with their teaching colleagues, our GLOW Creative Connections Researcher: Dr Florrie Darling, Bex Mather: GLOW Newcastle Director and Ann Winter: GLOW Newcastle Programme Manager.   

The Artist-practitioners will also be expected to lead or co-lead a Continued Professional development session for teachers.  

The residencies may include visits to cultural organisations, celebration events or exhibits. These potential activities will emerge from the project in consultation with students, teaching staff. 

There is additional budget to facilitate this part of the project.  All work related to the project will be scheduled between March and July 2025. 

 

We’d love to hear from artists or artist-practitioners who: 

  • Can demonstrate expertise in supporting young people with SEMH challenges to engage in creative activity and projects,  
  • Have a trauma informed practice and facilitate with care  
  • Can facilitate stimulating co-creative environments where young people can express themselves and explore their creativity in positive, constructive and supported ways 
  • Are keen to engage in research, to critically consider their own artistic and facilitation practice and to explore the research themes of this project in collaboration with teaching staff, young people and the GLOW Newcastle team,  
  • Have experience of leading training or continuing professional development  
  • Are adept at working collaboratively with multiple partners, have great time management, excellent communication skills and are skilled at managing their own workload and working to agreed deadlines.  

 

The learning from this project will feed into the creation of resources designed to support colleagues working in this field.  

 

Current DBS for child workforce and Limited Liability Insurance are essential for all applicants.
